SKYCOACH DRONE COMPATIBILITY FOR IN-GAME SIDELINE REPLAY

SkyCoach Drone Compatibility for In-Game Sideline Replay

One of the most common questions we hear from football coaches is simple: “Can I use a drone with SkyCoach?” The answer is yes.

SkyCoach is compatible with drones and can pull aerial video into your replay workflow when paired with a compatible drone controller. Whether you want to capture practice from above, get an All-22 style look, or add another angle for player development, drone footage can be a valuable part of your video operation.

WHY COACHES ARE ADDING DRONES

Over the last several years, drones have become increasingly popular across high school, college, and professional programs. Sideline and end zone cameras are still the foundation of football video, but an aerial view shows things you simply can’t see from ground level.

Drone footage helps coaches evaluate:

  • Offensive formations and spacing
  • Defensive alignments and rotations
  • Run fits and pursuit angles
  • Special teams lane discipline
  • Player leverage and positioning
  • Overall field structure

Many coaches describe drone footage as the closest thing to an All-22 view they can get during practice.

HOW SKYCOACH INTEGRATES DRONE FOOTAGE

SkyCoach was built to be flexible with a variety of video sources, and drones are one of them. Programs running compatible DJI and Autel controllers have successfully folded drone footage into their SkyCoach replay workflow, letting coaches review aerial angles right alongside their traditional camera views for a more complete picture of what happened on a play.

Whether you’re breaking down practice film, scrimmages, or game-day footage, an aerial angle can surface details that are tough to catch from the usual camera spots.

HOW DO I CONNECT A DRONE TO SKYCOACH?

Connecting a drone to SkyCoach comes down to the controller, not the drone itself. You need a drone controller with an HDMI output port—or a USB-C port that supports video output. Drones don’t ship with these controllers; they’re an optional add-on you choose for your setup. Once you have a controller that can output video, the SkyCoach Remote Camera Kit (RCK) treats that aerial feed like any other camera angle in your replay workflow.

Not sure whether your controller outputs video? Send us the model and our team will verify compatibility before you build it into your setup.

WHICH DRONES WORK WITH EACH CONTROLLER

Because compatibility is driven by the controller, the drone you fly needs to pair with one of the controllers SkyCoach supports—namely the DJI RC Pro, DJI RC 2, DJI Smart Controller, or Autel Smart Controller SE. As of January 2026, the common pairings are:

DJI RC Pro

  • DJI Mavic 3
  • DJI Mavic 3 Cine
  • DJI Air 2S

DJI RC 2

  • DJI Mini 4 Pro
  • DJI Air 3
  • DJI Air 3S
  • DJI Neo

DJI Smart Controller

  • Mavic Air 2
  • DJI Mini 2
  • DJI Air 2S
  • Phantom 4 Pro V2.0
  • Mavic 2 Zoom
  • Mavic 2 Pro

CONTROLLERS THAT DON’T WORK

Any controller that relies on a phone or tablet to display the drone’s video will not work with SkyCoach. Without a direct HDMI or USB-C video output from the controller itself, there’s no feed for the Remote Camera Kit to capture.

DOES SKYCOACH WORK WITH DRONE-TEK?

Yes. Many football programs use Drone-Tek tethered drone systems for practices and game day. SkyCoach is compatible with Drone-Tek systems that use supported video-output controllers, making it easy to add an elevated coaching angle to your existing replay setup. A tethered drone paired with SkyCoach replay gives coaches a powerful way to review formations, spacing, and execution from directly above the field.

More recently, some of our customers have started running the newest tether system on the market—the AeroMast Tether System—which delivers extended flight times for continuous aerial coverage through an entire practice or game. SkyCoach works with AeroMast-tethered drones the same way it does with other supported setups: as long as the controller can output video, the aerial angle drops right into your replay workflow.

CAN EVERY DRONE BE USED WITH SKYCOACH?

Not every drone system is compatible. Some consumer-level drones rely on a phone or tablet to display video and don’t provide a direct video output from the controller. Those systems typically can’t be integrated into a replay system. The DJI Mini 3 is one example: its compatible controllers—the DJI RC-N1 and DJI RC—aren’t on our list of supported controllers, so it isn’t supported by SkyCoach.

Before buying a drone for football use, confirm that the controller supports video output. If you’re unsure whether your drone or controller will work, our team can help verify compatibility.
